8 Wild Winter Fun to Try

Young woman at winter.

When the snow starts falling and school breaks are fast approaching, you know it's time to get ready for your winter vacation. This year, get ready to get adventurous and build some vacation memories that you will always talk about for years to come. This won't be just any winter getaway; this will be wild winter fun.

Dog Sledding

Imagine yourself driving a team of sled dogs across a white blanketed terrain. Dog sledding tours are available in notable winter vacation spots such as Maine, and of course Alaska. There are options at just about any level, from day-long classes on being a “musher” to three-day solo treks where you drive, camp, and care for the dogs.

Heli-Skiing

Heli-skiing is a method of skiing where a helicopter drops you off just above the ground at the top of a mountain. This is instead of needing a ski lift. Not only can a helicopter often take you higher and to locations that a ski lift might not reach, but many skiers feel like the ski terrain feels more natural. The extra momentum from jumping out of the helicopter is sure to give you a good head start down those slopes.

Kiteboarding

For adrenaline junkies, there is kiteboarding. In this fast-paced activity, people on snowboards and skis are propelled by a parachute that catches the wind. Kiteboarders are harnessed onto the parachute and there are control bars just like a regular parachute. This wild winter sport is rapidly becoming quite popular in ski resorts everywhere.

Ice Climbing

In places like Ouray, Colorado, the weather is so cold that the waterfalls freeze. Wild adventurers everywhere have taken advantage of these frozen waterfalls and have taken to climbing them. It is a big step up from simple rock climbing, but it is definitely a wild form of fun.

Bobsledding

With the help of a couple professionals, you can bobsled down an Olympic rated bobsled track in Lake Placid, New York. The sleds shoot down a twisty ice and steel track at breakneck speeds.

Cold Water Surfing

For those that don't mind the bite of cold water, zip up your wetsuit and go cold water surfing. You'll have the waves almost to yourself at select surfs along Alaska's coast. Just make sure you have some hot cocoa on standby.

Snowshoe Backpacking

All across America and Canada, people strap on their snowshoes and take week-long backpacking trips through the frigid wilderness. Many guided tours are available across the world for just these kinds of trips for those that would like some company and the help of a professional.

Wild Alaska Tours

Alaska is probably the hot spot for wild winter adventures. One area that they have down pat is Wild Alaska Tours. These journeys last from a couple days to much longer voyages that lead you through the Alaskan wilderness. See polar bears in their natural habitats, see the aurora borealis from a clearing in the deep woods, and experience nature the way few people have.

No matter how tame or adventurous you prefer to be, there is some wild winter fun to be had out there. Make this vacation one for the books and turn your getaway into an adventure.
